Once the brisk winter air starts warming up in anticipation of spring, there’s only one way to welcome in this season’s beauty…with a visit to the Philadelphia Flower Show, of course! This award-winning, annual celebration of all things blooming offers up the most gorgeous blossoms you can imagine from Saturday, March 3 to Sunday, March 11 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

And with this year’s theme set as “Wonders of Water,” you can expect plenty of extravagant displays featuring desert succulents, rainforest flowers, woodland shrubs, mountain greenery, and more. That way, you’re sure to get a taste of the unique plants that inhabit every part of the world.

Top Stops at this Floral Affair

For 189 years, the Philadelphia Flower Show has been wowing garden experts and homegrown horticulturists alike with some of the world’s most exotic plants and gravity-defying displays.

And this year, the “Wonders of Water” theme keeps you in tune with the delicate and interdependent relationship between water and our most beloved blooms. Among the lavish greenery at this affair, you’ll find lots of garden-related activities and food-filled events to take part in, such as:

  • Preview Party Gala on Friday, March 2
  • Butterflies Live! exhibit on all days of the Philadelphia Flower Show
  • Fido Friday on Friday, March 9
  • Tastings by Fine Wine and Good Sprits from March 3 to March 11
  • Garden Tea on Sunday, March 4 at 11:30 AM or 2:45 PM
  • Presentations throughout the festival and more

Let’s dive into a few of the other events that are blossoming at this garden gala…

Environmental Education and Events

By highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, the Philadelphia Horticultural Society aims to educate festival-goers about the necessities of clean water and a healthy ecosystem.

That’s why this year’s show is filled with events like the Philadelphia Water Summit on Wednesday, March 7 from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM. Here, you’ll gather more information on how you can do your part in preserving the environment’s most precious gems and sustaining the health of our planet.

Once you’ve finished getting an environmental education, a tropical oasis awaits you in the form of a multi-level bamboo waterfall and a rain curtain, which leads you through a lush Entrance Garden.

To up the ante on this rainforest experience, the PHS adorns the spectacle with over 4,000 exotic plants, including a water lily that spans three feet in diameter. While you’re meandering over the suspended rope bridge in this tropical display, you’ll catch glimpses of flowers like orchids, birds of paradise, and more.

If you’re planning to visit this festival with your little ones, don’t forget to stop by the Teddy Bear Tea Party on March 11 at 11:30 AM. At this kid-friendly tea celebration, your tiny tots are welcome to bring along their favorite stuffed toy and sample some yummy sandwiches, pastries, and much more.

Grab Your Gardening Gloves!

Of course, you can’t attend a flora-filled event and not expect to get your hands a little dirty! Luckily, the Philadelphia Flower Show helps you get crafty at the Make and Take experience.

Operating each day of this flower festival, you and your friends are free to put your flower-designing skills to the test by creating an enchanting flower crown, a whimsical water garden necklace, a succulent planet, or anything else.

Plus, nightlife enthusiasts can bust a move while surrounded by beautiful blooms at the Flowers After Hours showcase with a performance by The Village People featuring Ray Simpson. Doors open on Saturday, March 3 at 8:30 PM and close at 11:30 PM. To secure your place in the running for some prizes, be sure to don a disco-chic 70s-inspired outfit.
