New Jersey Car Inspection Checklist

Drivers all across the Cherry Hill, Mount Laurel, and Collingswood areas know that it’s important to keep up with routine automotive maintenance. Whether it’s an oil change, a tire rotation, a filter replacement, or even getting your windshield wipers swapped out, it’s always important to stay on top of service to help keep your vehicle in great shape, but to also ensure that your vehicle passes when it’s time for the New Jersey State Inspection. Here are a few tips on the New Jersey Car Inspection from us at Cherry Hill Nissan.

The Purpose of the Vehicle Inspection

It’s important to have your vehicle inspected every two years. It’s a way to make sure that your vehicle is safe on the road and that its emissions are up to the standards set by the state of New Jersey. In order to stay ahead of your vehicle’s inspection, look at the inspection sticker on the inside of your windshield to see the month that the sticker expires. This way, you’ll know when you should schedule your vehicle’s inspection. If you have a new car, you don’t have to have the vehicle inspected until you’ve officially had it for five years.

Where to Have Your Vehicle Inspected?

There are actually a few options for where to go when it’s time for your car’s inspection. You can head to a State Inspection Station in your area. These stations can perform all the necessary inspections on your vehicle, including the emissions at no additional charge. You simply need to pay the registration fee. However, you’ll want to check the wait time for these stations before going, because it could be awhile before your vehicle’s inspection starts. You can also take your vehicle to private inspection facilities, like your local dealership. They have all the necessary equipment on-site to perform these inspections. While there is an additional fee, you can effectively avoid long lines and wait times at the State Inspection Stations.

Schedule Early to Avoid the Fines & Penalties

Scheduling your inspection ahead of the official expiration date is highly recommended. You can effectively get your vehicle inspected and have two years without having to worry about it. However, if you put off your inspection, and you’re driving around with an expired sticker, you could face some trouble. This includes fines up to $200, and the possibility of the Motor Vehicle Commission revoking your registration privileges, which will be a legal requirement to keep your vehicle off of the road until you pay the fees and can have your vehicle legally registered again.

Come Prepared to Your Inspection Appointment

No matter where you go to have your vehicle inspected, you’ll need to bring a few important items with you in order to see the inspection through. This includes your driver’s license, which should already be on you at all times when you’re behind the wheel. You don’t actually have to be the owner of the vehicle you’re having inspected, but you do have to be a licensed driver. There are two other important documents that you’ll need to have with you. The vehicle registration is important because it shows that the vehicle is legally purchased. The last document you need to bring is your State of NJ Insurance ID Card, which will prove to the inspector that you’re an insured driver.

What If My Car Fails the Inspection?

If your vehicle fails to meet the state requirements, it won’t pass the inspection and you won’t get the new sticker. However, they’ll provide you with detailed information on why your vehicle failed, and the steps that you need to take to ensure that your vehicle passes its next inspection. Once you have those issues taken care of, you can have your vehicle inspected.
